The double portion

This is a "Reader's Digest" version of a longer written piece which I hope will one day be a message I deliver in public...

The story of Elisha and Elijah is the story of upgrade and double portion. Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's anointing as prophet - that meant Elisha was asking to be Elijah's firstborn son and heir! In terms of ministry, Elisha far surpassed Elijah in power, and scope. You can read the whole thing in 2 Kings 2. It is a journey in many ways - from salvation to maturity, from life to death to resurrection, from one identity to the other. The double portion sounds amazing, but it comes at a cost. And, if I'm honest, I'm no more interested in the cost - I want the pay off!

If we are seeking significant increase and upgrade, there is a loss first. There may be multiple losses. I personally experienced a few, but the major loss was the death of my husband. In that journey of recovery, I learned that my old life as a married woman was not going to be REstored or REnewed, because it was completely gone. There was no way to bring it back because death is final this side of heaven. I could no longer be married to my husband, so my life was going to look completely different. And in order to get to the completely new life, I was going to become a different person. I’m still recognizable obviously, but so many things have changed for me that my old ways don’t fit me anymore.

Before the moment of Elijah's death, Elisha asked for a double portion as a son and heir of Elijah, his spiritual father. The vision of Elijah being taken to heaven on a chariot of fire confirmed that his request was granted: God had considered him a spiritual son of Elijah, and Elisha could receive his inheritance when Elijah died. There was a vision from heaven that confirmed, then a process of walking it out.

Let’s apply this to our own situations. Many of us have experienced the loss or even death of a dream, a relationship or a ministry. Once the grief has lessened, and there is a new commitment to follow the new with the Lord, there are a few milestones that must be passed on the way to the double portion.

We are all heirs

Elisha was designated an heir by God. It was confirmed by a sign (the chariot of fire) and the anointing that came to him through Elijah’s cloak. He knew for certain he had inherited the double portion when he was able to perform the same miracle of parting the waters of the Jordan River.

We are all heirs in Christ

Who are you a spiritual heir of?

God is a Redeemer of ALL things
God used Elijah’s burnout to provide an heir, Elisha, who would succeed AND surpass him. In the end, that same heir also contributed greatly to destroying the woman (Jezebel) who caused Elijah’s burnout, and duplicated or recreated and improved on previous miracles.

What has been stolen that you are asking God to buy back? This will be done to the detail. God misses nothing! Declare and proclaim what that thing you are waiting for is.
Take hold. Use worship and warfare to bring it back. Read out Is 54 passage

The inheritance must be taken up

Elisha picked up the cloak, the mantle then became his and he stepped out. Witnesses (the company of the prophets) confirmed what they saw in him. He had a sign, and he acted. He did not wait for more confirmation but he was ready and prepared before that moment. He had been apprenticed, called and mentored.

It is not enough to have a word. You have to step into your calling. Moses was dead, and Joshua still had to get up and move the Israelites out - through circumcision which was painful, through the river, and into battle. It took courage to do that. (Joshua 1:9)

A law of inheritance is in place

Elisha had because he asked OR was it because God had planned for Elisha to be anointed to the level that he was? Either way, if Elisha had not asked, he could never have received. It is time for you to stand up and ask. There is a legal precedent in the heavenly realm for your inheritance. Declare Ps 16:6-8
Stand in the courts of heaven and declare what is your legal right. Deny the enemy legal access to what is your inheritance by removing blockages of unforgiveness and bitterness. Think of yourself as a dearly loved firstborn son who will inherit everything and more.
We do not deserve this and did not earn it. We have been freely given this. That is what inheritance is: a parent sets aside something to pass on to the next generation. Whether a legacy or something to help us move ahead, it is our responsibility to take up our mantle, step out and level up.
